Unlike standard lenses that aim for general clarity and versatility, special lenses are engineered to achieve particular visual outcomes.

One common category of spesialobjektiver includes tilt-shift lenses. These lenses allow the photographer to manipulate the plane of focus. The "tilt" function enables the user to angle the lens, creating a selective focus area that can produce a miniature effect or a unique depth of field. The "shift" function is primarily used for architectural photography, allowing the correction of converging vertical lines when shooting tall buildings, preventing them from appearing to lean inward.
