Spektraldensitet, often abbreviated as power spectral density (PSD) in English, describes how the power of a signal or time series is distributed over frequency. It is a function that quantifies the intensity of oscillations or fluctuations within different frequency bands. Essentially, it tells us how much "power" is present at each particular frequency.

Mathematically, spektraldensitet is defined as the Fourier transform of the autocorrelation function of a stationary random process. For a time series $X(t)$, its power spectral density $S_X(f)$ is related to its autocorrelation function $R_X(\tau)$ by the Wiener-Khinchin theorem: $S_X(f) = \mathcal{F}\{R_X(\tau)\}$, where $\mathcal{F}$ denotes the Fourier transform.

The units of spektraldensitet depend on the units of the signal. For a signal with units of volts squared, the spektraldensitet will have units of volts squared per hertz. If the signal represents power, then the spektraldensitet has units of power per hertz.
