It is opposite to general-to-specific or top-down reasoning, which derives specific predictions from general rules. The term can describe both natural cognitive processes and algorithmic strategies for learning from data.

In practice, specific-to-general reasoning begins with observation of specific cases, features common to these cases, and then the formation of a general rule or hypothesis that covers those instances. The rule is then tested against new data; if failures occur, the hypothesis is revised and may converge toward more accurate generalizations. Examples include concept learning, where a learner identifies a general category after seeing multiple examples, or scientific hypothesis formation, where theories emerge from accumulated observations.

In machine learning and artificial intelligence, specific-to-general methods include certain forms of inductive reasoning, rule induction, case-based reasoning, and some forms of expert systems. They contrast with bottom-up generalization from data or top-down rule-based inference. The effectiveness depends on data representativeness, the complexity of the domain, and mechanisms to guard against overgeneralization, such as cross-validation, regularization, or model complexity penalties.

Limitations include susceptibility to biased sampling, overgeneralization, and failure to distinguish correlation from causation. Proper use often requires combining specific-to-general reasoning with validation, domain knowledge, and critical evaluation.
