Although not a widely standardized measure, speakerfrequently appears in some research discussions as a way to assess speech activity and engagement across participants, particularly in multi-party dialogues and meetings.

Measurement approaches include: 1) turn-based frequency, the count of speaking turns per unit time (turns per minute); 2) contribution share, the proportion of total turns attributed to the speaker. For multi-party contexts, normalization may be needed to account for varying numbers of participants or turn lengths; some frameworks combine frequency with mean turn length or speaking time to create composite indices. Data often come from transcripts or automatically annotated audio using speech activity detection and speaker diarization.

Applications include evaluating conversational balance in meetings, classroom discussions, or negotiation settings; analyzing dialogue systems to ensure responsive and fair user interaction; and research on politeness, influence, and conversational dominance.

Limitations involve dependence on transcription quality and the definition of a speaking turn; cultural and contextual differences in turn-taking; short backchannels and overlaps can complicate counting; using only frequency may ignore duration and content.
