Sotsiolingvistika is the study of how language use varies across social contexts and how social factors influence linguistic structure and change. It examines the relationship between language and society, focusing on how variables such as age, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, occupation, and location shape speech, as well as how language signals identity and group belonging.

The field originated in the mid-20th century, notably from William Labov’s variationist sociolinguistics in the United States, and has since expanded to include ethnographic and discourse-oriented approaches. Methods combine fieldwork and natural or elicited speech with quantitative analysis to link linguistic variables to social predictors. Common techniques include sociolinguistic interviews, participant observation, matched-guise experiments, and analysis of speech communities and communities of practice.

Key topics encompass phonetic and phonological variation (for example, vowel shifts or r-lessness), code-switching and language choice, diglossia, and style-shifting.
