Sorbents are materials used to remove substances from liquids or gases by trapping them through adsorption, absorption, or chemical reaction. The term covers a range of materials designed to capture contaminants, humidity, or solvents, either reversibly or irreversibly.

Sorbents are commonly categorized as adsorbents or absorbents. Adsorbents provide surfaces that attract and hold molecules on their exterior or within pores, while absorbents take substances into their bulk substance. Common adsorbents include activated carbon, silica gel, zeolites, aluminas, and clays. Absorbents often consist of desiccants and polymers, such as cellulose-based materials, polymer resins, and some metal oxides. Porous materials with high surface area, including newer classes like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), are also used for specialized separations.

The effectiveness of a sorbent depends on properties such as surface area, pore size distribution, chemical affinity for the target contaminant, temperature and humidity stability, mechanical strength, and regenerability. Adsorbents are typically chosen for surface interactions and pore structure, while absorbents are selected for bulk uptake and desiccation. Some sorbents are designed for reversible use through regeneration by heating, washing, or pressure changes; others are considered spent after binding hazardous contaminants and require safe disposal.

Applications span environmental protection and industrial processing. Sorbents are used in air and water purification, spill cleanup, solvent recovery, gas drying, protective equipment, and consumer desiccants. Selection involves evaluating the contaminant chemistry, concentration, operating conditions, regeneration needs, and total cost of ownership.
