Soluorganellit, often referred to as organelles, are specialized subunits within a cell that perform specific functions. These are analogous to organs in a multicellular organism, each with a distinct role to maintain the cell's life processes. The term "organelle" is derived from "organ" and the Greek suffix "-elle," meaning small.

In eukaryotic cells, such as those of animals, plants, and fungi, organelles are typically enclosed by their own membranes, which helps to compartmentalize cellular processes and maintain distinct internal environments. This compartmentalization is crucial for the efficiency and regulation of complex cellular activities. Examples of membrane-bound organelles include the nucleus, which houses the genetic material; mitochondria, responsible for energy production through cellular respiration; the endoplasmic reticulum, involved in protein and lipid synthesis; the Golgi apparatus, which modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids; and lysosomes, which contain digestive enzymes. Plant cells also possess chloroplasts, the site of photosynthesis, and a large central vacuole, which maintains turgor pressure and stores water and nutrients.

Prokaryotic cells, such as bacteria and archaea, generally lack membrane-bound organelles. Their genetic material is located in a region called the nucleoid, and essential cellular functions occur in the cytoplasm. Ribosomes, responsible for protein synthesis, are present in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, but they are not membrane-bound. The presence or absence of these specialized structures is a key distinction between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell types.
