Solmiovärjäys, also known as tie-dye in English, is a resist dyeing technique where fabric is tied or folded in various ways and then dyed. The dye penetrates the undyed areas, creating unique patterns. The term "solmiovärjäys" directly translates to "knot dyeing" in Finnish, reflecting the method of tying the fabric.

The process typically involves using rubber bands, string, or other fasteners to create sections of fabric that will resist the dye. These tied sections prevent the dye from reaching the fabric underneath, resulting in distinct white or lighter-colored patterns against a dyed background. Common folding and tying techniques include the spiral, bullseye, and random crumple methods, each producing different visual effects.
