Soittotavan is a Finnish term that translates roughly to “the playing style” or “the manner of playing.” In music pedagogy and scholarship it refers to how a musician produces sound on a given instrument, combining technique, articulation, tone production, and expressive choices to create a distinct approach to performance. The concept can describe both a musician’s personal manner of playing and the conventional practices associated with a musical genre or repertoire.

Core elements of soittotavan include physical technique, tone and touch, articulation and attack, phrasing, rhythm, and dynamics. For example, on a violin, soittotavan covers bow grip, contact point, and left-hand intonation; on a wind instrument, embouchure, breath control, and embouchure adjustments; on keyboard instruments, finger touch, pedal use, and attack slightness or percussiveness. Beyond mechanics, it encompasses stylistic decisions such as vibrato usage, phrasing conventions, and tonal color appropriate to the repertoire.
