Soft templating is a synthesis strategy in materials science in which self-assembled, soft matter structures such as surfactant micelles, block copolymer aggregates, or lipid assemblies act as temporary templates around which inorganic or polymer networks form. After solidification, the template is removed to yield porous materials. It is contrasted with hard templating, which uses rigid, pre-formed templates.

During soft templating, a template forms via self-assembly in solution or an organized phase. Inorganic precursors condense around the template through hydrolysis and condensation; subsequent template removal (calcination or solvent extraction) leaves behind pores whose size and connectivity reflect the template geometry. Because the templates are flexible and tunable, soft templating can produce mesoporous and nanostructured materials with relatively high surface area and tunable pore distribution.

Common realizations include surfactant-templated mesoporous silica materials (for example, using CTAB to form hexagonal mesophases subsequently solidified by silica condensation). Block copolymer templating can yield mesoporous polymers and carbonaceous materials upon carbonization. Lipid and polymer gel templating are also used to create porous hydrogels and bioinspired materials. The method allows broad control over pore size by adjusting template type, concentration, and synthesis conditions.

Applications span catalysis, adsorption, separations, drug delivery, and energy storage. Advantages include relatively mild processing and the ability to tailor porosity at the nanoscale. Limitations include template removal requirements, potential extraction residues, and challenges in achieving long-range order or large-scale production. Ongoing research seeks to expand the range of templates and improve structural stability and scalability.
