Soft clustering is a family of clustering methods in which data points are assigned to clusters with varying degrees of membership rather than belonging to a single cluster unambiguously. Each point is described by a membership vector that expresses its degree of association with each cluster, and typically the components of this vector sum to one. This allows the representation of uncertainty and overlapping structure in data.

Fuzzy c-means is a canonical soft clustering algorithm. It minimizes a weighted within-cluster distance and updates cluster centers and membership values iteratively. The fuzziness parameter m>1 controls the level of entanglement among cluster assignments; larger values yield fuzzier partitions, while m close to 1 approaches hard clustering.

Gaussian mixture models provide a probabilistic soft clustering framework in which data are modeled as arising from a mixture of Gaussian distributions. The Expectation-Maximization algorithm estimates mixture weights, means, and covariances, producing posterior responsibilities that serve as soft memberships for each data point.

Other soft clustering approaches include possibilistic clustering, which relaxes the constraint that memberships sum to one, and various spectral and Bayesian methods that produce soft assignments under different assumptions.

Soft clustering is advantageous when clusters overlap, when data contain noise, or when an intermediate degree of membership is meaningful for downstream tasks. Drawbacks include higher computational cost, sensitivity to initialization, and the need to choose model parameters and distance metrics carefully.

Applications span image segmentation, bioinformatics, market research, document clustering, and anomaly detection. Evaluation metrics include the fuzzy silhouette, partition coefficient, and entropy of the membership distributions; for some tasks, hard labeling is obtained by assigning each point to the cluster with the highest membership.
