A socjolekt, derived from the Polish words "socio" meaning social and "leksem" meaning lexeme or word, is a linguistic variety used by a specific social group within a larger speech community. This term is often used interchangeably with the English term "sociolect." Socjolekts are distinct from regional dialects, which are defined by geographical location, as they are primarily shaped by factors such as age, gender, social class, occupation, ethnicity, and shared interests or activities.

The vocabulary, grammar, and even pronunciation of a socjolekt can differ from the standard language. These variations serve several functions. Firstly, they can act as a marker of group identity, allowing members to recognize each other and reinforce their sense of belonging. Secondly, a socjolekt can create a sense of solidarity and exclusivity, making it more difficult for outsiders to fully understand or integrate.
