sobressalto
A sobressalto is a jump or startle, often involuntary, caused by a sudden shock, surprise, or fright. It is a common human and animal reaction to unexpected stimuli. This physiological response involves a rapid activation of the sympathetic nervous system, leading to a surge of adrenaline. Physiologically, a sobressalto can manifest as a sudden tensing of muscles, a quick intake of breath, and an increased heart rate. In animals, it can involve freezing, fleeing, or a defensive posture. The term "sobressalto" originates from the Portuguese language and translates directly to "over-jump" or "leap over." While often associated with fear, a sobressalto can also occur in response to loud noises, sudden movements, or even unexpected social interactions. It is a survival mechanism that prepares the organism to react quickly to potential threats. In a psychological context, the experience of a sobressalto can be fleeting and is usually followed by a return to a resting state once the perceived threat is no longer present. Repeated or extreme sobressaltos can be indicative of heightened anxiety or other psychological conditions.
