Snoek, scientifically known as Thyrsites atun, is a large, oily marine fish in the family Gempylidae. It is found in temperate waters of the southern hemisphere and is an important commercial species in several countries. In southern Africa the fish is widely known simply as snoek and is a staple in local markets and cuisine.

Snoek is an elongated, predatory fish with a dark blue-green back, silvery sides, and a pale belly. The dorsal fin runs most of the length of the back and the tail is deeply forked. It has a large mouth with sharp teeth. Market fish are typically mid-sized, but individuals can grow longer and heavier. The flesh is oily, rich in flavor, and prized for smoking and canning.

This species occurs in cool temperate waters of the southern hemisphere, including off the coasts of South Africa, southern Australia, and New Zealand, as well as along the western and southeastern coasts of South America (Chile and Argentina). It is largely pelagic and migratory, feeding in offshore waters and moving between feeding and spawning areas.

Snoek feeds mainly on smaller fish, squid, and crustaceans. It is heavily fished by longline and other commercial gear. Because stock status varies by region, fishing is managed with quotas, size limits, and seasonal measures to ensure sustainability. In South Africa, smoke-dried snoek is a traditional product; fresh fillets are used for grilling, stews, and other preparations, and canned forms are sold in some markets.
