Snapcap, often written as snap cap or snap-cap, is a dummy cartridge used with firearms to enable safe dry-fire practice and function testing. Unlike live ammunition, snap caps contain no powder and, in most designs, no live primer. They are shaped and sized to chamber and extract like real rounds, while providing a cushioned impact surface to protect the firing pin, chamber, and locking mechanism during cycling.

Construction and variants: Snap caps come in metal or polymer cases with a hollow primer pocket and a soft insert or cushion where a primer would be. The bullet end is typically inert, a plastic insert, or a flat cap that preserves overall weight and balance. Some designs use a polymer or silicone primer substitute that deforms on impact. Caliber offerings span many common cartridges, from rimfire to centerfire, and brands may differ in mounting method and material.

Uses and benefits: The primary purpose is safe dry firing and training. They allow shooters to test triggers, safeties, and feeding/ejection without risking damage to firing pins or springs. Gunsmiths and armorer courses also use snap caps for inspection, manipulation drills, and magazine tests.

Availability and safety: Snap caps are widely available for popular calibers and should be selected to match the firearm’s chamber dimensions. They are not a substitute for live ammunition and should be used only for intended dry-fire practice. Always ensure firearms are unloaded and follow manufacturer guidance when using snap caps.
