Sláðarsjúkdómar refer to a group of diseases that affect the trachea, commonly known as the windpipe. These conditions can range in severity and impact breathing, leading to a variety of symptoms.

Common sláðarsjúkdómar include tracheitis, which is an inflammation of the trachea, often caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Symptoms can include a harsh, barking cough, fever, and difficulty breathing. Tracheal stenosis is another condition where the trachea narrows, restricting airflow. This can be caused by congenital abnormalities, injury, or prolonged intubation. Symptoms include shortness of breath, noisy breathing (stridor), and a weak cough.

Other sláðarsjúkdómar might involve tumors, either benign or malignant, that grow within or press upon the trachea. These can obstruct the airway and cause persistent coughing, hoarseness, and sometimes bleeding. Traumatic injuries to the trachea, such as those from accidents or blunt force, can also lead to various complications including fractures or ruptures, requiring immediate medical attention.
