This is the ultimate destination for waste that cannot be reused, recycled, or treated further. The primary goal of a sluttdeponi is to safely and permanently isolate waste from the environment, preventing pollution of soil, water, and air.

Modern sluttdeponi facilities are engineered and carefully managed to minimize environmental impact. They typically involve several key features. The base of the landfill is usually lined with impermeable materials, such as clay or plastic membranes, to prevent leachate, the liquid that forms when rainwater filters through waste, from contaminating groundwater. This capping process seals the waste and helps to reduce infiltration of rainwater and gas emissions.
