A skruenøgle, often translated as wrench or spanner, is a tool used to provide grip and mechanical advantage in applying torque to turn objects—usually rotary fasteners, such as nuts and bolts, or to hold them stationary. The majority of wrenches are designed to fit a specific type of fastener head.

There are many types of skruenøgler, each suited for different tasks. Common examples include the combination wrench, which has an open-end on one side and a box-end on the other; the adjustable wrench, which can be altered to fit different sizes of fasteners; and pipe wrenches, designed with serrated jaws for gripping round objects like pipes. Socket wrenches consist of a handle with a ratcheting mechanism and a detachable socket that fits over the fastener. Allen wrenches, also known as hex keys, are L-shaped tools used for fasteners with hexagonal sockets.

The effectiveness of a skruenøgle relies on its ability to securely grip the fastener head without slipping. Slipping can damage both the tool and the fastener, and can be dangerous. The size of the skruenøgle must match the size of the fastener being worked on. Materials used in their construction typically include hardened steel alloys to ensure durability and strength.
