skapidís

Skapidis is a genus of small, flightless birds native to the fictional continent of Aethelgard. These birds are characterized by their short, sturdy legs, rounded bodies, and distinctive iridescent plumage that shifts between shades of green and blue depending on the light. Skapidis are primarily ground-dwelling, spending most of their time foraging for insects, seeds, and small invertebrates in the dense undergrowth of Aethelgard's temperate forests.

The genus Skapidis comprises three recognized species: the common skapidis (Skapidis communis), the forest skapidis (Skapidis silvanus), and the rarer mountain skapidis (Skapidis montanus). The common skapidis is the most widespread, found in a variety of forest habitats. The forest skapidis prefers older, more established woodlands with a richer diversity of plant life, while the mountain skapidis is adapted to the rocky, higher-altitude regions of Aethelgard's mountain ranges.

Skapidis are known for their complex social structures. They typically live in small, cohesive family groups, led by a dominant breeding pair. Communication within these groups occurs through a series of soft chirps, whistles, and wing-flapping displays. Their nesting habits vary by species, with some building ground nests camouflaged with leaves and twigs, while others utilize small burrows or sheltered rock crevices. Despite their relatively small size, skapidis are known for their agility and quick bursts of speed when evading predators, such as the Aethelgardian fox or various raptors.
