sjúkdómverkun is the Icelandic term for the national healthcare system. It is overseen by the Ministry of Health and is primarily financed through taxation, providing free or heavily subsidised medical services to all residents. The system is organized into a network of primary care units, public hospitals, and specialised centers that work collaboratively to deliver a continuum of care.

Primary care forms the first line of the system. Local clinics staffed by general practitioners offer preventive services, routine check‑ups, and treatment of common illnesses. Patients are encouraged to register with a local primary provider, who also coordinates referrals to secondary or tertiary specialists when needed. Public hospitals operate in six regions and offer a full range of medical, surgical, obstetric, and psychiatric services. They are often the designated facility for emergency care and more complex interventions. In addition, a small number of privately operated clinics exist, but private insurers cover only a fraction of the population and typically provide supplemental services.

The national health insurance scheme ensures that essential services are available regardless of income, while auxiliary funding mechanisms, such as pharmaceutical subsidies and health promotion programmes, help to balance costs. sjúkdómverkun also collaborates with research institutions and community organisations to promote public health initiatives. Despite challenges related to geographic isolation and a relatively small population, Iceland’s healthcare system is frequently cited for its high quality, equity, and strong primary care emphasis.
