Sivuversot are shoots that arise from axillary buds along a plant’s stem or branches. They grow laterally, extending the canopy and contributing to the plant’s overall form. Sivuversot originate from the leaf axils and are normally regulated by apical dominance, a growth control mechanism in which the main shoot tip produces auxin that suppresses nearby buds. When the apical tip is removed or when light and resources favor lateral growth, these buds can break dormancy and develop into new shoots.

In many plant species, lateral shoots play a key role in canopy structure, light capture, and the development of fruiting wood. They can influence interior shading, air circulation, and disease risk if growth becomes too dense. The exact pattern of lateral shoot development is species-specific, with some plants forming many vigorous laterals while others maintain a more restrained habit.

Management and pruning are used to shape plants through selective thinning and training of lateral shoots. Techniques include pinching back tips to encourage branching, thinning crowded shoots to improve light penetration, and shortening long laterals to promote sturdy next-year growth. In fruiting shrubs and trees, lateral shoots are often steered to form a productive framework and appropriate fruiting wood, while the central leader is maintained or adjusted as needed. Sivuversot are also used for vegetative propagation in some species, where suitable lateral shoots are cut and rooted to form new plants.
