Seismology is the scientific study of earthquakes and the propagation of elastic waves through the Earth. Seismologists use seismographs, instruments that record ground motion, to detect and measure earthquakes. These instruments are deployed in networks around the world to monitor seismic activity. By analyzing the arrival times and amplitudes of seismic waves recorded at different locations, seismologists can determine the location and magnitude of earthquakes.

There are two main types of seismic waves: body waves and surface waves. Body waves, P-waves (primary waves) and S-waves (secondary waves), travel through the Earth's interior. P-waves are compressional and travel fastest, while S-waves are shear waves and travel slower. Surface waves, Love waves and Rayleigh waves, travel along the Earth's surface and are responsible for much of the shaking felt during an earthquake. The study of these waves provides crucial information about the Earth's internal structure, including the composition and physical properties of the crust, mantle, and core.

Seismology also investigates the causes of earthquakes, which are primarily related to the movement of tectonic plates. Faults, which are fractures in the Earth's crust, are where these movements occur. When stress builds up along a fault and is suddenly released, an earthquake happens. Seismologists also study volcanic seismicity, which are seismic events associated with volcanic activity. The field contributes to hazard assessment and the development of building codes to mitigate the risks posed by earthquakes.
