Siseõnnetusmootor, often referred to as an internal combustion engine, is a heat engine where the combustion of a fuel occurs with an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber that is an integral part of the working fluid flow circuit. The expansion of the hot combustion gases produces useful work for the engine. This type of engine is ubiquitous in many forms of transportation, including cars, motorcycles, and airplanes, as well as in portable generators and lawnmowers.

There are two main types of internal combustion engines: the gasoline engine (also known as the Otto cycle engine) and the diesel engine (also known as the Diesel cycle engine). Gasoline engines typically use a spark plug to ignite the fuel-air mixture, while diesel engines rely on the heat generated by high compression to ignite the fuel. Both types operate in a cycle, commonly the four-stroke cycle, which involves intake, compression, power, and exhaust strokes. Some smaller engines, like those in chainsaws or some motorcycles, use a two-stroke cycle.

The efficiency of an internal combustion engine is measured by its fuel economy and its ability to convert the chemical energy of the fuel into mechanical work. Factors affecting efficiency include engine design, operating conditions, and the quality of the fuel used. Emissions from internal combustion engines, such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, have significant environmental implications and are a subject of ongoing research and regulation aimed at reducing their impact.
