Typical comfort ranges are roughly 20–22°C for living spaces and 21–23°C for offices, with relative humidity around 40–60%. Deviations can lead to perceived drafts, sweating, or static discomfort and can encourage mold growth if moisture is excessive.

Air quality focuses on pollutant levels and airflow. Key indicators include CO2, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter, moisture, and odours. Adequate ventilation reduces CO2 and pollutant buildup, while filtration and source control reduce exposure to allergens and fine particles. Lighting and acoustics also contribute to perceived comfort and cognitive performance.

Assessment and standards: International and national guidelines set targets for air exchange rates, pollutant concentrations, and thermal conditions. Measurements typically use CO2 sensors, particulate matter monitors, humidity meters, and air-flow readings. Certification schemes and building codes address indoor climate as part of overall health, energy efficiency, and sustainability goals.

Management: good indoor climate results from balanced design, ventilation with heat recovery, moisture control, and regular maintenance of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems. Source control, low-emission materials, and appropriate occupancy practices further protect air quality. The concept remains central to health, comfort, and productivity in both new construction and existing buildings.
