A siphon is a tube, pipe, or a similarly shaped arrangement of conduits that allows a liquid to travel from a higher elevation to a lower elevation, even over an intermediate barrier, by means of atmospheric pressure. The key principle behind a siphon is that the liquid will flow from the higher reservoir to the lower reservoir as long as the outlet is lower than the surface of the liquid in the source reservoir. The liquid is drawn up the longer leg of the siphon and then flows down the shorter leg, creating a continuous flow.

The operation of a siphon relies on the fact that atmospheric pressure pushes down on the surface of the liquid in the source reservoir. This pressure, combined with the weight of the liquid in the downward sloping section of the tube, creates a pressure difference that drives the flow. If the height of the vertical lift from the source reservoir to the highest point of the siphon exceeds the atmospheric pressure (approximately 10 meters or 33 feet of water), the siphon will cease to function, as the atmospheric pressure will not be sufficient to push the liquid that high.
