Siphonwirkungen refers to the phenomena and effects associated with siphons. A siphon is a tube, pipe, or a similarly shaped arrangement of conduits that allows a liquid to travel from a higher elevation to a lower elevation, even over an intermediate barrier, by means of atmospheric pressure. The key principle behind a siphon is that the liquid will flow from the higher reservoir to the lower reservoir as long as the outlet is lower than the surface of the liquid in the source reservoir. The liquid is drawn up the longer leg of the siphon and then flows down the shorter leg, creating a continuous flow.
