Sinécdoque is a figure of speech in which a part of something is used to represent the whole, or vice versa. It is a type of metonymy, where one word or phrase is substituted for another with which it is closely associated. In sinécdoque, the relationship is typically one of inclusion or composition.

Common examples include using a body part to represent a person, such as "all hands on deck" where "hands" refers to the entire crew. Similarly, "wheels" can be used to refer to a car, as in "nice wheels." The reverse is also true; the whole can represent a part. For instance, "America voted" means that the people of America voted, not the entire landmass. The material from which something is made can also stand for the object itself, such as "iron" for a sword.

Sinécdoque is frequently employed in literature and everyday speech to add conciseness and vividness. It can also be used for stylistic effect, drawing attention to a particular aspect of the subject being discussed. The effectiveness of sinécdoque relies on the audience's ability to make the implied connection between the part and the whole.
