Sinusoperasjon, also known as sinus surgery, refers to a surgical procedure performed to treat chronic sinusitis or other sinus-related conditions. Chronic sinusitis is a condition characterized by long-term inflammation and swelling of the sinus cavities, leading to symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain and pressure, and loss of smell.

The primary goal of sinus surgery is to improve sinus drainage and airflow. This is typically achieved by widening the natural openings of the sinuses or removing blockages like polyps or enlarged tissues. The most common type of sinus surgery is Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS). In FESS, a surgeon uses an endoscope, a small, flexible tube with a camera and light, to visualize the inside of the nasal passages and sinuses. Specialized instruments are then used through the endoscope to carefully remove diseased tissue and open blocked sinus pathways.

Other less common surgical approaches may involve external incisions, but FESS is generally preferred due to its minimally invasive nature, shorter recovery time, and reduced scarring. Sinus surgery is usually considered when medical treatments, such as nasal sprays and antibiotics, have not provided adequate relief.

The decision to undergo sinus surgery is made after a thorough evaluation by an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist, which may include a physical examination, nasal endoscopy, and sometimes imaging studies like CT scans. Recovery times vary, but most patients experience significant improvement in their symptoms after surgery. Potential risks, though generally low, can include bleeding, infection, or changes in vision.
