Singulaarisuuksia, often translated as singularities, are points or regions in spacetime where the laws of physics as we currently understand them break down. These are not points of mere difficulty in calculation but represent fundamental limitations of our theories, particularly general relativity. The most commonly discussed examples are found in the context of black holes and the Big Bang.

Within a black hole, general relativity predicts that all matter collapses to a central point of infinite density and spacetime curvature, the singularity. This infinite curvature means that concepts like distance and time become ill-defined. Similarly, the Big Bang model suggests that the universe originated from a state of extremely high density and temperature, which can also be described as a singularity.

The existence of singularities poses a major challenge to theoretical physics. It indicates that general relativity is likely an incomplete description of gravity and spacetime at these extreme conditions. Physicists believe that a quantum theory of gravity, which would unify general relativity with quantum mechanics, is necessary to understand what truly happens at these points. Until such a theory is developed and experimentally verified, singularities remain theoretical constructs representing the limits of our current knowledge.
