silikasement

Silikasement is a colloquial term referring to a type of cementitious material that incorporates silica fume as a supplementary cementitious material. Silica fume, also known as microsilica, is a byproduct of the production of silicon and ferrosilicon alloys. It is an amorphous pozzolanic material that can significantly enhance the properties of concrete and mortar when added in appropriate quantities.

The inclusion of silica fume in cementitious mixtures leads to several improvements. One of the most notable benefits is increased compressive strength. The fine particles of silica fume fill the voids between cement particles, creating a denser microstructure. This densification, combined with the pozzolanic reaction of silica fume with calcium hydroxide, leads to a stronger and more durable final product.

Silikasement also exhibits improved resistance to chemical attack, particularly from sulfates and chlorides. The reduced permeability of silica fume concrete makes it less susceptible to the ingress of aggressive substances that can degrade conventional concrete. Furthermore, it can enhance resistance to abrasion and erosion. The increased impermeability is a key factor in its improved durability in harsh environments, such as marine structures or industrial facilities.

The mixing and application of silikasement require careful control of proportions and water-cementitious material ratios to achieve the desired performance characteristics. While it offers significant advantages, its higher cost compared to ordinary Portland cement and potential for increased stickiness during placement are factors to consider in its application.
