Sikkerhetslinjer, or safety lines, are critical components in fall protection systems. They are designed to arrest a fall, preventing a person from reaching the ground. These lines are typically made from strong synthetic materials like nylon or polyester, or sometimes steel cable, chosen for their high tensile strength and durability. The primary function of a safety line is to absorb the energy of a fall, thereby reducing the forces transmitted to the body of the user.

There are several types of safety lines, each suited for different applications. Vertical safety lines, often referred to as lifelines, are commonly used in situations where a worker is ascending or descending a structure. Horizontal safety lines provide a continuous anchor point for workers moving across a horizontal plane. Retractable safety lines, also known as self-retracting lifelines (SRLs), automatically extend and retract as the user moves and lock immediately in the event of a fall.

Proper inspection and maintenance of safety lines are paramount to ensuring their effectiveness. They should be regularly checked for signs of wear, damage, or degradation, such as cuts, abrasions, chemical exposure, or UV damage. If any defects are found, the safety line must be immediately removed from service. The correct attachment of safety lines to anchor points and harnesses is also crucial for their performance. Incorrect use or installation can compromise the integrity of the entire fall protection system.
