Sigil-based magic traces its popular modern development to the work of early 20th-century occultist Austin Osman Spare, who proposed that a symbol can house a subconscious goal. In typical sigil-based practice, the practitioner creates a unique sigil to encode a specific intention, then “charges” or activates the sigil with emotional energy and focus. After charging, conscious attention is reduced or released, allowing the subconscious to work toward manifesting the desired result. Chaos magic helped popularize this approach as a flexible, results-oriented method.
