This process is crucial for the survival and propagation of plant species, allowing them to colonize new areas and avoid overcrowding and competition with the parent plant. Plants have evolved a remarkable array of strategies to achieve this dispersal, often utilizing natural forces or other organisms.

One common method is anemochory, or wind dispersal. Seeds adapted for wind dispersal are often lightweight, small, or possess specialized structures like wings or feathery appendages that catch the wind and can be carried over long distances. Examples include dandelions with their pappus and maple seeds with their samaras.

Another significant dispersal mechanism is zoochory, or dispersal by animals. This can occur in several ways. Epizoochory involves seeds attaching to an animal's fur or feathers and being carried passively. Synzoochory, on the other hand, involves animals consuming fruits and seeds, with the seeds later being deposited in their droppings, often after passing through the digestive tract which can sometimes aid germination. Some plants also rely on animals to cache seeds, such as squirrels burying nuts, with the intention of retrieval but often leaving some uneaten to sprout.

Hydrochory, or water dispersal, is employed by plants growing near water bodies. Their seeds are often buoyant or enclosed in structures that protect them from water damage, allowing them to float downstream or across lakes and oceans. Finally, barochory, or gravity dispersal, is the simplest form, where fruits or seeds simply fall from the parent plant to the ground, often with some limited rolling or sliding motion.
