Shipdesign is the process of planning and specifying a vessel’s characteristics to meet its function while complying with regulations and economics. It combines naval architecture and marine engineering to optimize hull form, propulsion, stability, and equipment, with the goal of a safe, seaworthy, cost-efficient vessel for its intended operation.

The design process typically proceeds through concept, preliminary, detailed, and production design. Early work defines mission, capacity, speed, range, and operating conditions, and assesses hull and propulsion options. The preliminary design refines geometry and weight and evaluates performance and stability. Detailed design yields final drawings and system layouts; production design supports manufacturing planning.

Key considerations include hull strength under load, buoyancy and stability under intact and damaged states, trim control and metacentric height, fatigue resistance, and weight management. Propulsion, power, electrical, and safety systems must meet required performance with redundancy. Efficiency is influenced by hull shape, propulsion, and energy management; many ships use energy-saving devices and may adopt LNG, batteries, or hybrids.

Regulatory oversight comes from flag states and classification societies (for example, LR, ABS, DNV, BV). Design approval requires compliance with international conventions and national rules, including SOLAS, MARPOL, and Load Lines. Before service, ships undergo type approvals, construction verifications, and sea trials.

Shipdesign spans bulk carriers, tankers, container ships, general cargo ships, passenger ships, and specialized vessels. Trends emphasize fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, alternative fuels and power sources, and the use of digital tools for optimization and monitoring.
