Shieldforming is the deliberate creation of a protective barrier around an object or locus by shaping and deploying defensive fields or materials. The concept spans theoretical physics, engineering, and science fiction, and can describe approaches that reduce exposure to radiation, debris, or direct impact by forming a shield in situ.

Technologies are typically categorized into energy-field shields, material-based shields, and active-shield systems. Energy-field shields generate a field that deflects or absorbs incoming threats, using electromagnetism or plasma. Designs include magnetic or electrostatic fields around a vehicle, or dense plasma envelopes that attenuate certain radiation bands. Material-based shields rely on engineered media such as metamaterials or layered composites that reflect, absorb, or deflect energy and particles; these can achieve protection with reduced thickness by exploiting anisotropy, impedance matching, or interference effects. Active shields combine sensors, control systems, and field generators to adapt to changing conditions, enabling dynamic shaping of the barrier in real time and compensating for gaps or weaknesses.

Applications include protection of spacecraft from cosmic radiation and micrometeoroids, safeguarding critical infrastructure against environmental or kinetic threats, and theoretical concepts for defense systems or wearable protective devices in fiction and experimental research.

Key challenges include high energy requirements, added mass and complexity, field stability, interactions with atmosphere and matter, and the potential for unintended secondary effects. At present, shieldforming remains largely speculative or experimental and is more common as a topic in science fiction than in established engineering practice.
