Shaderlaskenta is a term used in Finnish computer graphics to describe the calculation performed by graphics processing unit (GPU) shaders to determine how a 3D scene is shaded and textured. The concept encompasses all per-vertex, per-fragment, and compute-based operations that contribute to the final image.

In real-time rendering the pipeline includes vertex shaders that transform vertex data, optionally tessellation and geometry stages that generate or modify geometry, and fragment (pixel) shaders that compute final color, lighting, and texture application. Compute shaders offer general-purpose GPU computation outside the traditional graphics pipeline and can populate buffers or textures used by other shader stages. Shaderlaskenta thus covers the full range of shading tasks from geometric transformations to lighting models and texture sampling.

Shaderlaskenta relies on shading languages such as GLSL, HLSL, Metal Shading Language, and SPIR-V, depending on the graphics API (OpenGL/Vulkan, Direct3D, Metal). Performance-critical shaderlaskenta requires careful optimization: minimizing texture fetches, reducing conditional branches, using appropriate precision, and keeping memory access coalesced. Profiling tools and shader compilers help identify bottlenecks and guide optimization efforts.
