Seroloogiat is the branch of laboratory medicine that studies serum components, particularly antibodies and antigens, to understand immune responses and diagnose diseases. In clinical practice, tests in seroloogiat typically use a patient’s serum or plasma to detect antibodies directed against infectious agents, or to detect components of pathogens themselves. Seroloogiat complements direct detection methods such as culture or molecular assays, though it can also identify immune status or exposure history.

The methods rely on antibody–antigen interactions. Indirect approaches use an antigen or immobilized component to capture antibodies from the patient’s serum (as in ELISA, immunofluorescence, and Western blot). Direct tests detect antigens, or utilize agglutination, precipitation, or neutralization assays. Many tests are qualitative, while others yield quantitative antibody titers.

Historically, seroloogiat developed from work on blood groups and immune reactions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with notable milestones such as the discovery of ABO blood types and the Coombs test. The introduction of enzyme immunoassays (ELISA) in the 1970s greatly expanded sensitivity and throughput.

Applications include clinical diagnosis of infectious diseases (HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, dengue, measles, SARS-CoV-2), assessment of immunity after vaccination, screening and compatibility testing in transfusion medicine, and epidemiological surveillance. Seroloogiat also supports autoimmune disease diagnostics through autoantibody detection and underpins biomedical research and some forensic analyses.

Limitations include the window period before antibody responses develop, cross-reactivity leading to false positives, variable test performance, and the need for standardized controls and interpretation within the clinical context.
