Biological and sensory sensitivity refers to the functioning of sensory organs and the nervous system. People vary in how intensely they perceive stimuli such as light, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Extreme sensitivity may be adaptive in some situations or problematic in others, giving rise to conditions such as hypersensitivity (hyperesthesia) or hyposensitivity.

Psychological and emotional sensitivity describes heightened awareness of social cues, emotions, and moral nuance.
