Sentence adverbials, also called sentential adverbs or disjuncts, are adverbs or adverbial phrases that modify an entire sentence rather than a single word or phrase within it. They convey the speaker’s stance, attitude, or evaluation of the proposition, and can indicate certainty, probability, concession, emphasis, or evidentiality. Examples include frankly, unfortunately, clearly, apparently, probably, and in my opinion.

Typical forms are single words (Clearly, Unfortunately), short adverbial phrases (To be honest, In my opinion), or longer clauses functioning as discourse markers (As it turns out, In any case). They are usually set off by commas, and most commonly appear at the beginning or end of a sentence, though mid-position is possible in some constructions.

Syntactically, sentence adverbials differ from ordinary adverbs that modify a verb, an adjective, or a noun within the clause. Their scope is the entire proposition rather than a local element. For example, “He clearly understands the material” uses clearly to modify the verb, whereas “Clearly, he understands the material” conveys the speaker’s overall assessment of the situation.

Usage and style notes emphasize that sentence adverbials express subjective stance. They are common in spoken and informal writing but should be used sparingly in formal prose, where overuse can appear hedging or opinionated. Cross-linguistically, various languages feature similar devices, though their placement and punctuation may differ.
