Sense-specific is an adjective used in neuroscience, psychology, and related fields to describe signals, representations, or neural populations tied to a single sensory modality. A sense-specific system processes information from one sense independently of others, supporting modality-specific perception and discrimination.

Common examples include the visual system, where photoreceptors and the primary visual cortex respond specifically to light, and the auditory system, where cochlear hair cells and primary auditory cortex respond to mechanical vibrations within particular frequency ranges. In olfaction, olfactory receptor neurons are tuned to specific odorants. The concept also applies to somatosensory modalities such as touch, temperature, and proprioception, each with dedicated receptors and cortical areas that maintain modality-specific processing at early stages.

In practice, many brain regions are organized into sense-specific streams, enabling precise feature extraction within a modality. However, the brain also engages in multisensory integration, combining information across senses in higher-order areas to create a unified perception. Sense-specific processing coexist with cross-modal interactions, providing both detailed sensory analysis and perceptual coherence.
