Self-infection, also known as autoinfection, refers to the process where a parasite or pathogen already present in or on an organism reinfects the same organism. This is distinct from being infected by an external source. Self-infection can occur through various mechanisms. In some cases, it involves the direct transfer of infectious agents from one part of the body to another. For instance, scratching an itchy area infected with a fungus and then touching another part of the skin can lead to the spread of the infection to the new site.

Parasitic infections are a common area where self-infection is observed. Certain intestinal worms, like pinworms, can cause self-infection. Eggs laid by the female worm around the anus can be transferred to the fingers during scratching, and then ingested, leading to a new infection within the same individual. Similarly, some protozoan parasites can also exhibit autoinfective cycles.

The hygiene of an individual plays a significant role in preventing self-infection. Maintaining good personal hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, can significantly reduce the risk. Avoiding scratching infected areas and promptly treating existing infections are also crucial measures.
