The underlying idea dates back to early work on statistical machine translation in the 1990s, and it was popularised by the introduction of neural sequence‑to‑sequence models in 2014. These models typically consist of an encoder, which reads the input sequence and translates it into a fixed‑size context vector or a series of hidden states, and a decoder, which generates the output sequence token by token while attending to the encoder states.

Common applications include machine translation between languages, automatic summarisation, speech recognition, and question answering. Variants of the architecture such as attention mechanisms, transformer networks, and recurrent neural networks enable more accurate long‑range dependency learning and improved fluency. In practice, seq2seq models are trained on large parallel corpora and evaluated with metrics such as BLEU scores or ROUGE scores.

Despite their successes, seq2seq approaches face challenges with very long sequences, out‑of‑vocabulary words, and generating diverse outputs. Current research explores unsupervised and semi‑supervised training, memory‑augmented techniques, and hybrid models with symbolic reasoning to address these limitations. The continued refinement of seq2seq methods remains central to advances in artificial intelligence for tasks that involve transforming structured or unstructured data.
