Sekundäärikierron, also known as the secondary circuit, refers to the electrical circuit in a transformer that is connected to the load. Transformers consist of at least two coils of wire, the primary coil and the secondary coil, wound around a common iron core. When an alternating current flows through the primary coil, it generates a changing magnetic field in the core. This changing magnetic field then induces a voltage in the secondary coil.

The secondary circuit comprises the secondary coil, the wiring connecting it to the electrical appliance or system, and the appliance itself. The voltage and current in the secondary circuit are determined by the voltage and current in the primary circuit, along with the turns ratio between the two coils. A higher turns ratio in the secondary coil compared to the primary coil results in a step-up transformer, increasing the voltage. Conversely, a lower turns ratio results in a step-down transformer, decreasing the voltage.

The function of the secondary circuit is to deliver the transformed electrical power to where it is needed. This is crucial in many applications, such as transmitting electricity over long distances at high voltages (then stepped down for safe use) or powering electronic devices that require specific, often lower, voltage levels than what is available from the mains. The load connected to the secondary circuit draws current, completing the circuit and allowing energy transfer.
