Sekalaistutkimusta, often translated as mixed methods research, is an approach in research design that involves collecting, analyzing, and integrating both quantitative and qualitative research within a single study or a program of inquiry. The core idea is to gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of a research problem than either quantitative or qualitative methods could provide alone.

Quantitative research typically involves numerical data and statistical analysis, focusing on measuring variables and testing hypotheses. Qualitative research, on the other hand, deals with non-numerical data, such as interviews, observations, and texts, aiming to explore meanings, experiences, and perspectives.

In mixed methods research, these two types of data are intentionally combined. This can occur at various stages of the research process. For instance, qualitative data might be used to explore a phenomenon and develop hypotheses, which are then tested quantitatively. Conversely, quantitative findings might be explained or elaborated upon using qualitative data.
