Sejtfalpermeabilitás refers to the property of the cell wall that determines what substances can pass through it and at what rate. In plant cells, fungi, and bacteria, the cell wall is a rigid outer layer that provides structural support and protection. However, it is not entirely impermeable. The permeability of the cell wall is crucial for the transport of water, nutrients, and waste products in and out of the cell.

The composition of the cell wall plays a significant role in its permeability. For example, in plants, the primary cell wall is composed mainly of cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin. These components form a porous matrix that allows small molecules like water and dissolved ions to pass through relatively easily. The secondary cell wall, which is laid down inside the primary cell wall in some plant cells, often contains lignin, making it less permeable.

In bacteria, peptidoglycan forms the main structural component of the cell wall, and its mesh-like structure also allows for the passage of small molecules. Fungal cell walls, primarily made of chitin, similarly exhibit selective permeability.

The permeability of the cell wall is a passive process, meaning it does not require energy from the cell. However, it is influenced by factors such as the size and charge of the molecule, as well as the pore size and the chemical properties of the cell wall material. While the cell wall acts as a sieve, the cell membrane, located inside the cell wall, is the primary barrier that regulates the passage of substances into and out of the cytoplasm, exhibiting much greater selectivity.
