Seigniorial refers to a system of landholding and social organization prevalent in medieval Europe and other parts of the world. It is characterized by the relationship between a lord, or seignior, and his vassals or tenants. The lord held large estates, known as manors, and granted land to his vassals in exchange for military service, loyalty, and other obligations. These vassals, in turn, might grant portions of their land to peasants or serfs.

Under the seigniorial system, the lord exercised considerable authority over his tenants. This authority often included judicial powers, allowing him to preside over local courts and enforce laws. Peasants were typically bound to the land and owed labor services and rent to the lord. They also often had to use the lord's mill, oven, or winepress, for which they paid a fee. In return, the lord provided protection and a degree of stability.

The seigniorial system was a fundamental aspect of feudalism, shaping economic, social, and political structures for centuries. While it provided a framework for governance and land distribution, it also created a rigid social hierarchy with limited mobility for the lower classes. The system gradually declined with the rise of centralized monarchies, the growth of a money economy, and peasant revolts.
