Seigniorial refers to a system of landholding and social organization prevalent in medieval Europe and other parts of the world. It is characterized by the relationship between a lord, or seignior, and his vassals or tenants. The lord held large estates, known as manors, and granted land to his vassals in exchange for military service, loyalty, and other obligations. These vassals, in turn, might grant portions of their land to peasants or serfs.
