A seeriahübriidsüsteem, or series hybrid system, is a type of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) drivetrain configuration. In this setup, the internal combustion engine does not directly drive the wheels. Instead, its primary role is to act as a generator, producing electricity to charge a battery pack or directly power an electric motor. This electric motor is then responsible for propelling the vehicle.

The key characteristic of a seeriahübriidsüsteem is the complete separation of the engine and the driving wheels. This allows the engine to operate at its most efficient speed and load, independent of the vehicle's speed or acceleration demands. The battery pack serves as an energy buffer, storing excess energy generated by the engine or recaptured through regenerative braking, and supplying power when additional energy is needed for acceleration or when the engine is not running.

Advantages of this system include potentially improved fuel efficiency, as the engine can be optimized for constant speed operation, and a smoother driving experience due to the electric motor's torque delivery.
