SDmodellen, or Social Determinants of Health models, are frameworks used to understand and address the social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health outcomes. These models recognize that health is not solely determined by individual behaviors or genetic predispositions, but is also significantly influenced by broader societal conditions.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines social determinants of health as "the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age." These include factors such as income, education, employment, social support, neighborhood and physical environment, and health care. SDmodellen aim to identify these determinants and their interactions to develop targeted interventions that can improve health outcomes.

There are various types of SDmodellen, including the social gradient model, the life course model, and the ecological model. The social gradient model posits that health outcomes are influenced by the social position of individuals, with those in more disadvantaged positions experiencing poorer health. The life course model focuses on the cumulative effects of experiences throughout an individual's life, while the ecological model examines the influence of different levels of the social environment, from the individual to the community and societal levels.

SDmodellen are used in public health research, policy-making, and practice to inform strategies for promoting health and reducing health disparities. By understanding the social determinants of health, stakeholders can develop more effective and equitable health interventions that address the root causes of health inequities.
