It typically features settings where advanced technology coexists with supernatural or magical phenomena. The genre often defies conventional genre boundaries by incorporating futuristic concepts like space travel or artificial intelligence alongside traditional fantasy elements such as mythical creatures, sorcery, or ancient prophecies.

A hallmark of scififantasy is its flexibility in worldbuilding. Unlike "hard" science fiction, which often strives for scientific plausibility, or pure fantasy, which may rely on entirely magical systems, scififantasy narratives do not require systematic explanations for their fantastical components. Technology might function indistinguishably from magic, or magic itself could be explained through pseudoscientific principles. This creates a unique narrative space where laser guns and enchanted swords can be wielded by the same characters.

Prominent examples of the genre include Frank Herbert's Dune, which combines interstellar politics with psychic powers and prophetic visions, and the Star Wars franchise, where a technological galaxy far, far away features a mystical energy field known as the Force. Anime and manga series like Final Fantasy also frequently explore this hybrid space. The genre's appeal lies in its ability to merge the sense of wonder from fantasy with the conceptual exploration common to science fiction, offering audiences a diverse and imaginative experience.
