In practice, Schutzbedürftigen may be entitled to a range of measures, depending on the legal framework: safeguarding and guardianship arrangements, housing and financial support, medical and psychosocial care, legal protection in asylum procedures, and access to education and welfare services. The application of protection measures aims to preserve safety, dignity and autonomy while ensuring that interventions respect the rights and preferences of the individuals concerned.

The term reflects a commitment to vulnerability-aware public policy, but it also raises questions about balancing protection with self-determination and avoiding stigmatization or overreach.
